The Crab in the Bucket Mentality: Breaking Free From Those That Hold You Back and Achieving Your Dreams

There’s an old story that can be very relevant to life. As you read the story, see if you have a crab mentality.

A person was walking along a beach and noticed some kids collecting crabs and putting them in a bucket. He remarked as to why they aren’t escaping. The kids explained to the man that when you have a bunch of crabs in a bucket, if one tries to escape, the others will pull it back down keeping it in the bucket.

Hmmm… so no crab ever escapes, some try and try but they can’t get out. Is your life like that? Do you let others pull you back into the bucket?

The Crab in the Bucket Mentality

Think of this in your life… if you are trying to lose weight, do your coworkers bring in cake to sabatoge you- keeping you in the bucket?

If you are trying to save money, do your friends invite you to an expensive restaurant or get you to chip in on a expensive gift for someone, or just ordering out everyday at work and encouraging you to do the same rather than bringing in your own lunch- keeping you in the bucket?

If you get a promotion at work or earn a recognition, do others say it was not really earned by you- so you feel like you didn’t really earn it- trying to keep you in the bucket?

Do you plan a side job to get out of the ‘rat race’ of working for others to make money for them and your family or friends say you shouldn’t do that- it’s too risky because they are afraid of you being successful or maybe they don’t understand the plan- keeping you in the bucket?

Do other people talk bad about your or spread rumors to try to pull you done- keeping you in the bucket?

Our methods of thinking, behaviors, and decision-making processes are greatly influenced by the people with whom we spend the most time. The saying by Jim Rohn is “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If you are always around people who make unhealthy life decisions in the area where you are aiming to improve, you are at risk of being pulled down.

If you find yourself in that situation, build yourself a ladder to get out of the bucket. You CAN stop being a crab in a bucket and you don’t need to have a crab mentality! You need to believe in yourself and your dreams. You need to know you are worth it. You need to surround yourself with people who have your back and want you to succeed. You need to have the strength and faith that you can get out of that bucket.

And once you are out, lend a hand and help get others out of that bucket!!! Give back! Pay it forward! And enjoy the ride!
